افتراضي Ali Ibn Abu Taleb Mosque in Madina

ALI IBN ABU TALEB MOSQUE in Madina

The Prophet used to pray Eid prayers at many locations in AI-Manakha. One of these locations was the mosque which is now called Ali ibn Abu Taleb Mosque .

Ibn Zabalah and Ibn Shibah have both quoted Abu Hurairah as saying that "The
first Eid AI-Fitr prayer ever to be performed by the Prophet in Madina was at the
courtyard of the house of Hakeem ibn AI-Adda.

Ibn Shibah, in another story, said Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed
his first Eid AI-Fitr prayer at a mosque behind the slaughterhouse inside the courtyard
of AI-Adda ibn Khaled's home. AI-Samhoudi said this is the house of his son Hakeem
which was to the west of AI-Musalla.

Probably this mosque at AI-Manakha area, in which the Prophet led the Eid AI-Fitr
prayer, is the one now known as Ali ibn Abu Taleb Mosque.

How did the mosque acquire its name?

It is not conceivable that Ali ibn Abu Taleb, the fourth Muslim caliph, would for any
reason abandon praying with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and build for
himself a private mosque. It is certain that the Prophet performed Eid AI-Fitr prayers at
this mosque before shifting the Eid prayers permanently to AI -Musalla Mosque.
However according to many historians, the mosque acquired its present name
because Ali ibn Abu Taleb led the Eid prayers at it when Caliph Osman ibn Affan was
besieged.

Location

It is to the north of AI-Musalla Mosque and in the northern part of Aridiya residential quarters. It is also opposite to AI-Aniyah" Street which originates from the westem square of the Prophet's Mosque between AI-Salam and AI-Rahmah doors. This street was inaugurated by Fakhri Pasha, governor of Madina during the Turkish rule after Worle War I.
The homes of AI llias and AI-Kurdi, at the terminal of AI-Tayar alley, are opening
towards this street. These two homes may probably be in the place of the old house of
AI-Hakeem ibn AI-Adda.

Construction of the mosque

This mosque in addition to AI-Musalla and Abu Bakr AI-Siddiq mosques were
renovated by Omar ibn Abdul Aziz, govemor of Madina during the Omayyad reign in
91-93 H (711-713 A.D.).

The governor of Madina during the Turkish rule, Zeinuddin Dighaim AI-Mansouri rebuilt the mosque in 88"1 H (1479 A.D.). It is clear from its present shape that the mosque was also rebuilt during the Ottoman rule.
